About Johanna Grace

During her childhood in New York, the company's founder grew to love the special occasion dresses hand made by her talented mother.  When she herself became a mother to her beautiful daughter Johanna, she found it difficult to find the sort of dresses she envisioned for her daughter.  She imagined Easter dresses made from embroidered cotton eyelet and Swiss dot, pure angelic Communion dresses of silk organza and fluffy tulle with crisp crinolines, and holiday confections made of lush velvet and plaid tartans with big bows and sashes.

She came to realize that these old fashioned style dresses with charming details made of traditional fabrics with quality couture construction were simply no where to be found.  This was her “a-ha” moment - the one that inspired her to start her own luxury dress company.  It was an interest in historic children's clothing & costume along with inspiration from the world’s greatest couturiers and a love for luxury textiles that helped lay the foundation for this new business.

After two years of research and planning combined with her professional experience as the Director of Marketing for an international company, fifteen years as CEO of Masterpiece Florals Wedding & Floral Design and her education at Parsons School of Design, the founder’s dream, the company Johanna Grace, was realized.   Johanna Grace opened in 2005 and has become a leading force in the e-commerce children’s couture market, making special occasion clothing for children all over the world.

Each day the couturiers at Johanna Grace are busy making these exquisite dresses incorporating old fashioned details - while keeping the dresses modern and comfortable.  But there is a lot more to this story than highly-detailed dresses.  When clients purchase a Johanna Grace dress, they can be sure not only that it will be beautifully and meticulously designed, but also that it will fit since it has been made especially for that child.  In our loft space in upstate New York each

Johanna Grace dress is custom-made to each child's measurements, from start to finish by one couturier, using the finest, old-fashioned couture sewing techniques.

Our couturiers have a century of experience in designing and making couture clothing.

Each pattern is hand drawn and cut, followed by a cotton fitting muslin that each girl tries on and returns to us marked with any adjustments if necessary.  The cotton muslin is an extravagant and painstaking step, but well worth it when purchasing a couture garment that will arrive and fit perfectly.  Our dresses are made with natural and luxurious essentials: silk duppione, shantung, and organza silk tartans, Italian tulles, vintage cotton prints and chintzes, breezy linens, old-fashioned cotton eyelets and embroidered Swiss dot, all accented with exquisite, carefully chosen trimmings.  When the couture garment is almost complete, the finishing details are done by hand, from bows made on the bias to hand rolled roses silk covered buttons and delicately gathered ruffles.

Since its grand opening Johanna Grace has remained a small custom couture house in the historic Saratoga Springs, New York area, dedicated to the personal touch while creating charming and elegant couture clothing children’s clothing for all special occasions.  To our delight,

Johanna Grace is worn by children all over the world.
